Cyberpunk Hotel

16 June 2009, 05:35

Here I am in a tiny little “cabin” in Schipol. It has a shower, free wi—fi, and, most importantly, a bed with big fluffy pillows and comforter. it’s about 6 by 6, and delightful. It has hourly rates. This is the best 56ish Euros I’ve ever spent. By the time I get home (in about 10 hours), I’ll be able to say I’ve had 4 hours of horizontal rest in the last 24! A new record for the trip.

I have been remiss.

12 March 2009, 05:37

I haven’t been blogging as much as I wanted to, which I’m sure you noticed. So now that I am taking a few days in France, I want to really spend some time writing, and hopefully a nice long post or two will be part of it. The good news is that this time it’s getting lots of research and writing done that’s keeping me from blogging, not illness or lack of action (the throwing up was a fluke. Otherwise I’ve been the picture of health).

For the record, I’ve arrived safe (if tired and irritated) in France, and after a morning of internet, I’m going to venture into town and see what can be seen.

A new adventure; and, if it's not ironic, what is it exactly?

10 March 2009, 10:24

So, clvrmnky has been sent once again to Europe to do work, that lucky monkey. This time the South of France. I’ve always had a hankering to go to the South of France, and it dawned on us, as we discussed the various difficulties of him coming for a few days to Accra, that I could instead go meet him in the SOUTH of FRANCE. That was Friday. This is Tuesday. I’m leaving tonight (late) and arriving tomorrow evening. The benefit of this plan is that I can spend the evenings with him on the days that he’s working, instead of just the days he can take off.

So, yesterday, lying in bed after my second violent bout of vomitting, I was contemplating the use of “ironic” in Alanis’s famous song. She’s gotten a lot of flack for it, although maybe more than she deserves since the second definition of ironic is “contrary to expectations”. But there are definitely some of her lines that, while they are something that needs more than a simple “coincidental” (and one has to admit that ‘isn’t it coincidental’ doesn’t really roll of the tongue very well), don’t really fit even the second definition of ‘ironic’. I thought this because I was thinking that it was ironic that I was barfing, but no, not really ironic.

The thing is, I’ve had this illness before. The morning before I took the bus to Accra to go home, I had the exact same illness. Vomiting, but basically nothing else. Once the stomach contents are cleared, rapid recovery. It isn’t ironic, really, but it is a weird coincidence. A coincidence that seems more meaningful than the term sufficiently conveys.

So, sufficiently recovered, on to France. I’ll be back in Ghana 6 days hence.

Back in Accra

17 January 2009, 07:50

Just a quick post to let people know I’m back in Accra. We narrowly missed a big traffic jam just before the airport (saw the beginnings of it, luckily missed it). The flight was safe and boring, I got some sleep for once, and arrived without incident last night at the hotel. I’m staying an extra day in Accra, just to catch up on my sleep and not stress my immune system too much.

More soon.

WTF Fast Internet

9 December 2008, 03:19

Don’t expect coherence from me today, internet. I’ve been up for over 24 hours at this point. I was unable to sleep on the first leg of the flight, and now I’m in the airport not having much luck with sleeping.

So, travel is always interesting. I ended up meeting these Scots/Brits in the Accra airport and I got to talking with them before our flight left. There were three, all of whom had been working on the new oil rig offshore in Ghana. They were boisterous and more distracting than the relatively repetitive news updates on the election. So I sat and chatted with them, in that funny way that chatting with drunk opinionated people can be. Well, one of them was flying business class, and he offered to get me a shower in Amsterdam, nothing weird, just that he can sign people into the business-class lounge. He went off to first class, and I hung out with the other two in steerage. We watched “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” because I mentioned my slight connection to Jules Verne. They both fell asleep, but despite the fact that it was a pretty dull movie, I did not.

Anyway, I figured the BC would have forgotten about me when he got of the plane (he was by far the drunkest of the lot), but there he was waiting, and I decided to take him up on his offer. So we went to the lounge, but it was closed, and we ended up in a different lounge. But no matter, this lounge is equipped with free juice, free coffee, comfy chairs, and the breakfast I’ve been dreaming of for a year (fresh fruit, granola, and plain yogurt with a few berries stirred in). Deelish.

I ended up chatting with the BC guy about lots of things, and it’s very interesting to get the perspective of someone with such a different place in the world than me. It was a pretty good chat, and now he’s off to catch his flight. I’m here using the FREE, INCREDIBLY FAST internet, and planning on getting the most out of this place over the next hour or so before I go off in search of a 20 minute chair massage and the part of the airport that has chairs that recline (this place has comfy chairs, but they are all of the upright variety, and I think I have to get some sleep).
